ICBC Donates to Set up the First Charity-based Microsurgical Eye Training Centre in Inner Mongolia

On April 13, the first charity-based "Microsurgical Eye Training Center" in Inner Mongolia's Hohhot supported by ICBC donation started operation, with the first 100+ trainee doctors from different place of the Autonomous Region on board as well. The training center, set up in an Affiliated Hospital of Inner Mongolia Medical College, offers advanced theoretical training course, surgery experimental training and opportunity for eye doctors in Autonomous Region to join the International Council of Ophthalmology public examination. Besides, every year impoverished 200 cataract patients will receive medical treatment from the training center, either free of charge or at lower fee.

The training center is set up by Chinese Foundation for Lifeline Express (CFLE) under a donation of RMB 2.7 million from ICBC to the Foundation. CFLE is a charity organization dedicated to alleviate poverty and reduce blindness. For the past 14 years since inception, the Foundation has cured more than 110,000 cataract patients and trained up 3500+ doctors. There are many cataract patients in China villages still living in the darkness because of inadequate medical conditions, said Nellie Fong Wong Kut-Man, the Founding Chairman of CFLE. The immediate task is to improve the medical skill of local eye doctors. Life Express wishes more caring companies and individuals like ICBC joining this important mission of charity initiative.

In 2007, ICBC and China Foundation for Disabled Persons joined together to subsidize 1000 impoverished cataract patients in Sichuan, and in 2008, ICBC donated RMB 2.7 million to CFLE to subsidize 1100 poor cataract patients from Guizhou mountainous areas to restore eyesight through surgery. This is another donation of ICBC to support charity. For this reason, ICBC has received twice the award for "Brightness Contribution Prize" from Lifeline Express.

An executive with ICBC said, ICBC as a keen supporter of social charity is committed to the responsibility philosophy of "beginning from the community, giving back to the community, serving the community". The Bank has been active in providing donations and looking at new days to support philanthropic causes to fight against exclusion, improve people's livelihood and build harmonious society through community involvement. In 2010, ICBC donated more than RMB 50 million in money and kind to the victims of natural disasters, the earthquake in Qinghai's Yushu and deadly mudslide in Gansu's Zhouqu County. At the same time ICBC opened "green" channel in the shortest span to provide fast, convenient and all-inclusive financial services for the relief work. ICBC also has extended total RMB 48.6 billion of loans to support the relief work and reconstruction of Sichuan's Wenchuan after the earthquake. Besides, ICBC supported numerous charity initiatives. A total of RMB 62.52 million has been spent in carrying out "green'" poverty-alleviation program, education aid activities, care and concern to children of migrant workers and public awareness program on financial knowledge.
