Kenyan Shilling Gains Against Dollar To Close Week High - May 18

The Kenyan shilling went up slightly against the U.S. dollar on Friday, closing the week higher as inflows surged.

The shilling traded to the dollar at an average of 100.40, up from 100.45 where it ended in the previous session.

The Central Bank of Kenya quoted the shilling at 100.42 per dollar in the Friday trading, up from 100.43 on Thursday.

On the other hand, commercial banks in the East African nation placed the local unit at between 100.40 and 100.55 from 100.45 and 100.55 in the Thursday session.

Forex traders attributed the gain to a growth in dollar inflows from offshore investors and diaspora remittances, which helped support the shilling. Against the British pound, the shilling similarly strengthened to end the day at 135.60.

Analysts expect the shilling to continue with surge against the two currencies and remain stable against regional currencies.
