German stocks closed flat on Tuesday, with the benchmark DAX index down 7.67 points, or 0.06 percent, to close at 12,970.04 points.

Pharmaceutical company Merck lost 6.39 percent, the top loser among the blue chips, followed by industrial giant Thyssenkrupp and Deutsche Bank, which lost 6.12 percent and 1.52 percent respectively.

Commerzbank gained 3.30 percent, becoming the top gainer. Energy group RWE advanced 1.61 percent. Chemical group BASF went up by 1.32 percent.

German multinational software corporation SAP was the most traded share with a turnover of 291.39 million euros (346.25 million U.S. dollars).
